How plasma cutting quoting works in AutoCut

Three steps from CAD upload to customer-ready quote — built for estimators who need speed without sacrificing accuracy.

  1. 1

Import the nest or part DXF

Upload customer CAD. AutoCut reads cut length, hole count, and plate size — the core drivers for plasma cycle time and material cost.

  2. 2

    Apply plasma rates and material

Select carbon steel, stainless, or aluminium plate and your machine's pierce and cut parameters. Thickness and amperage assumptions stay in your library, not in someone's head.

  3. 3

    Quote and send

Review machine time, gas and consumable allowances, material, and markup. Turn around plasma RFQs while the customer is still comparing suppliers.

Built for plate, thin to thick

Set your own amperage, pierce and bevel rates per material and thickness.

Plasma cutting quotes: where manual estimating breaks down

Plasma shops often quote from dollars-per-inch rules that ignore pierce time, plate waste, and preheat on thick stock. That works until the nest is dense or the material price moves.

Structural steel, HVAC, and industrial fabrication generate high RFQ volume with thin margins. AutoCut ties price to geometry — cut metres, pierces, and sheet utilisation — so two estimators do not produce two different numbers on the same DXF.

Plasma cutting cost calculation should include setup, handling, and consumables, not just torch-on time. Configure your table once and let every quote inherit the same logic.

The biggest swing on a plasma quote is thickness. Pierce time climbs steeply as plate gets heavier, and on thick stock a single pierce can take longer than several hundred millimetres of cutting. A rule expressed in dollars per metre carries none of that, which is why the rule that works on 6mm quietly loses money on 25mm.

What AutoCut factors into your quote

  • Cut length and pierce time by thickness
  • Plate size and remnant/waste factor
  • Material price per kg or per sheet
  • Setup and handling minutes per job
  • Quantity breaks for repeat production parts

Typical customers: structural steel fabricators, HVAC duct shops, and plate service centres.
