Router quoting: why cut length alone gets it wrong

Most router estimates start from perimeter length and a dollars-per-metre rule. That holds for 6mm acrylic and falls apart on 25mm ply, where the same contour is cut three or four times.

Routing time is governed by feed rate and pass count, not perimeter alone. A part in 18mm MDF at a 6mm depth of cut takes three passes on every contour, so its real cycle time is triple what a length-based rule predicts. Pocketing changes the sum again, because area — not edge — sets the time.

Sheet yield is the other half of the number. Router work is nested onto standard sheets, and the difference between seven and eight parts per sheet moves the per-part cost far more than a small feed-rate error. AutoCut prices from the geometry in the drawing, so the same DXF produces the same quote regardless of who opens it.

Tooling is the cost most router estimates leave out entirely. Cutters wear, and abrasive sheet goods like MDF and composite panel wear them quickly — a bit that lasts for months in acrylic may not survive one large MDF job. Folding a tooling allowance into the machine rate keeps that honest without having to track individual cutters.
