What CNC quoting software actually has to get right

Every cutting process prices the same way at the top level — material, machine time, setup, markup — and then diverges completely in the detail. Laser lives or dies on pierce count and sheet yield. Plasma is dominated by thickness. Waterjet carries a real consumable cost per hour. Router pays for passes and tooling. A quoting tool that flattens all of that into one rate per metre will be roughly right on the jobs you already understand and wrong on the ones that matter.

The other half is consistency. Most shops do not have a pricing problem so much as a variance problem: two estimators produce two different numbers from the same drawing, and neither can fully explain the gap. Deriving cut length, hole count and part size from the CAD file removes the guesswork from the inputs, so the only thing left to argue about is the rate — which is a decision you can actually make once and apply everywhere.
